The Colorado Avalanche announced Wednesday night that the team has signed forward Tyson Jost to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Jost is scheduled to join the Avalanche for the remainder of the 2016-17 season.

Colorado’s first-round selection (10th overall) at the 2016 NHL Draft, Jost recently completed his freshman season at North Dakota, tallying 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists) in 33 games. Jost finished second on the team in points, goals (tied) and assists, and shared the club lead with five power-play goals. His 35 points currently rank second among all NCHC freshmen.

“We are excited to announce that Tyson has signed his entry-level contract and will be joining us for the rest of this season,” said Avalanche executive VP/GM Joe Sakic in a statement. “Tyson is an all-around player. He competes, plays the game hard and is reliable at both ends of the ice. He just finished a strong year at North Dakota and we’re looking forward to seeing him in an Avalanche sweater.”

Jost helped Team Canada to a silver medal at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship in Montreal and Toronto this past January where he tallied four points (goal, three assists) in seven games during the tournament.

This is one of the times I am not happy to say I was right. NC$$ and NHL need to renegotiate contract to ensure draft picks play at least two years with their college choice. This is so ridiculous, deprives all fans of seeing these prospects play.

    • UofMGoldenChokers

I figured he would stay two years since he is a huge fan of Toews and I thought he would follow the same path. Sucks. Hopefully we have some players that can score coming in.

      • Denver_hockey

I bet the Avs lured him away. They are desperate for some hard-working talent on their team.

        • UofMGoldenChokers

Not surprising, since the Avs are the worst in the NHL

          • Denver_hockey

They still should have convinced him to stay another year at ND from my perspective. They are TWENTY FREAKING POINTS behind the 2nd worst team! They need to dump the ‘lazy’ guys on the team and start from scratch which is going to be a LONG process. If anything, Jost could get into some bad habits from some of the guys on this team instead of playing the game the right way at North Dakota. I have always liked DU hockey more than the Avs, but they are a complete embarrassment and it’s sad to see.

          • UofMGoldenChokers

I’m sure their start from scratch was getting Jost to come as soon as possible. I’m sure they threw extra signing cash at him as well.

          • DU_Fan

Take a look at my reply to model94. The Avalanche can’t start from scratch. No team wants what they have, via trade or free agency. They tried bringing in Wiercoch and Colburne to get the Denver fan base to come to the games. This was a bigger failure than bringing in Jost will be. Jost really had no choice, I don’t blame him at all. Just a real shame, unfortunately I saw it coming.

          • UofMGoldenChokers

He should have held out all the way through senior year and then maybe became a free agent.

          • DU_Fan

That is pretty risky, especially with injuries. The lure of playing right away is too much for anyone to turn down. He will be in the lineup immediately and that was his goal.

          • UofMGoldenChokers

Yeah……I just wanted to be selfish and have him all 4 years.

          • DU_Fan

            HAHAHA. Good one…

          • Denver_hockey

There are plenty of teams interested in Landy and Duchene.

          • DU_Fan

Not at the price Sakic is demanding, none.

    • model94

It isn’t the “fans” decision or life. It’s Tysons

      • Denver_hockey

True but other sports do require athletes to go to college before turning pro for at least 1 year and some require an athlete to stay for at least 2 years. Should hockey do the same?

        • model94

          No. It’s their life.

          • Denver_hockey

Not really the answer I was looking for. Why shouldn’t we take down the restrictions on college football and basketball then if ‘it’s their life.’

          • DU_Fan

            Correct…

          • model94

Well I can’t do it, and most likely neither can you. But I disagree with the restrictions. And i’m not giving the answer you are looking for. I’m giving mine :)

        • Trevor Verkuehlen

For the most part I agree with having players stay 2 years. The only con I think you have to consider is if it would discourage some players (primarily canadians and players from other nations) from going the NCAA route. I think before a rule is made some research should be done. send out some surverys to former college players and young players right now and see what their opinion would be. IF the two year rule is made and players just opt to go Major Junior then its counterproductive for the NCAA

      • DU_Fan

Please read again. Where did I say it was the “fans” decision? Don’t blame this decision on Tyson either, give me a break. There is no player in college hockey, except Army and Air Force, that would not pass up the chance to play in the NHL immediately. Sakic has screwed up things so bad for the Avalanche that he is grasping for straws. Putting a good young player on the ice, surrounded by the crap of the NHL, will not help either. This is an impotent attempt to restore a fan base that will never come back while Sakic is at the helm. The writing was on the wall when Roy left, too bad Sakic was to illiterate to read it.

        • UofMGoldenChokers

Too bad Roy didn’t freak out more when he left….those were always good to watch.

          • DU_Fan

He was on downers at the end. If not, he would have punched Sakic in the chops.

          • UofMGoldenChokers

Stay on topic. You proposed a rule that would prevent an individual from pursuing a profession he wants to pursue, when he wants to pursue it. Because it (your quote) “deprives fans of seeing them .. play”. Who are you, or any so-called “fan”, to stake such a claim on someone’s livelihood? Get a life.

          • DU_Fan

I proposed nothing that would prevent anyone for pursuing a profession he wants. Merely, if this individual chooses the college route, the NHL through a new CBA could require this player to participate for 2 years. If someone wants to be free after one year, one month, or even one week they have the option of playing for one of the “minor” leagues such as the OHL, WHL, or foreign leagues. That would be their choice, nobody would force them to play college hockey. This latter route worked pretty well for Austin Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk.
