St. Cloud State announced Friday that Heather Weems, associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Drake University, has been named athletic director at SCSU, effective July 1.

Weems will take over for retiring athletic director Morris Kurtz, who has been at St. Cloud State since 1984.

“We are pleased to welcome Heather Weems and look forward to the institutional leadership she will provide,” St. Cloud State president Earl H. Potter III said in a statement. “Her extensive experience with strategic planning and relationship-building and her commitment to the student-athlete experience are exemplary. That experience will help her shape an integrated athletic and recreational vision and strategic plan that fulfills the university’s mission.”

“I am ready to take the next step and be athletic director of the quality program at St. Cloud State,” added Weems. “I am pleased to have been selected and look forward to building upon the legacy of Dr. Kurtz. St. Cloud State has a strong athletics reputation both regionally and nationally. While building upon that will be challenging, it will also be exciting and rewarding. My husband and four young boys look forward to becoming involved in the St. Cloud community.”

At Drake, a private Division I private institution in Des Moines, Iowa, Weems has been responsible for internal affairs and oversight in NCAA compliance, academic success services, sports medicine and strength and conditioning, as well as sport program supervision.

Prior to Drake, Weems was the associate AD at Denver for seven years, first involved in internal operations and then with student services and compliance. Weems was on the senior staff at Denver when it transitioned from Division II to Division I.

Weems has a bachelor’s degree from Iowa and a master’s degree from Denver.
