Former Lake Superior State forward and volunteer coach Doug Laprade will return to the program in 2011-2012 as the Lakers’ new assistant coach.

Laprade played for the Lakers from 1987-1991, winning a national championship in 1988 and then becoming a volunteer assistant from 1991-93.

“I’m thrilled to be back and coach the team I played on,” Laprade said in a press release. “I’ve always had a lot of respect for (LSSU head coach) Jim (Roque) and (assistant coach) Tim (Christian).”

Laprade spent the past seven seasons with the Sault Area (Mich.) High School hockey program, including four years as head coach. The Blue Devils won 70 games and three regional titles during that tenure and made one state semifinal appearance.

Laprade replaces Rich Metro, who was recently named head coach and general manager of Villard de Lans of League Magnus in France.
